Madang Cocoa Co-operative Association Limited

The Madang Cocoa Co-operative Association Limited was established in 2012 under the auspices of the Cocoa Board of PNG, Madang Regional Office, as the umbrella co-operative for 34 Primary Cocoa Co-operatives in Madang Province. The primary co-operatives were also established with support from the Cocoa Board and represent 90% of the Cocoa Growing population of Madang Province.

At the time, the Cocoa Board had the intention of empowering farmers to directly participate in the export or marketing of cocoa beans and cocoa products in order to bring about better prices for farmers and better socio-economic returns to farmers and farming communities. This was the vision behind the establishment of the Cocoa Co-operatives.

The Madang Cocoa Board office’s work extended into Morobe Province as well with the establishment of 39 Primary Cocoa Co-operatives and one umbrella co-operative known as the Morobe Cocoa Co-operative Association Ltd.

The Madang Cocoa Co-operative and Morobe Cocoa Co-operative Associations joined hands to form an export company, Mamo Cocoa Exports Limited in 2012, to export cocoa from farmers under the primary co-operatives in Madang and Morobe provinces. Unfortunately, lack of government support and ineffective management resulted in the company going out of business after a few months of operation and several exports to New Zealand and Europe.

The Madang Cocoa Co-operative Association Limited is now getting a new lease of life with the support of Eastern Gate Capital Advisors Limited and the Madang Regional office of the Cocoa Board of PNG. The relationship with Eastern Gate began in 2015 when a shipment of 3 tonnes was made to Noosa Chocolate Factory in Brisbane, Australia.
