The Madang Cocoa Co-operative Association Limited was established in 2012 under the auspices of the Cocoa Board of PNG, Madang Regional Office, as the umbrella co-operative for 34 Primary Cocoa Co-operatives in Madang Province. The primary co-operatives were also established with support from the Cocoa Board and represent 90% of the Cocoa Growing population of Madang Province.
At the time, the Cocoa Board had the intention of empowering farmers to directly participate in the export or marketing of cocoa beans and cocoa products in order to bring about better prices for farmers and better socio-economic returns to farmers and farming communities. This was the vision behind the establishment of the Cocoa Co-operatives.
The Madang Cocoa Board office’s work extended into Morobe Province as well with the establishment of 39 Primary Cocoa Co-operatives and one umbrella co-operative known as the Morobe Cocoa Co-operative Association Ltd.
